What is the Kampala Green Industry Campaign (GIC)
The Kampala Pollution Control Task Force (PTF) recognizes that there is a need to trigger a paradigm shift in the industrial sector from business as usual, to achieve socio-economic transformation, environmental sustainability and climate resilient development.
Building on the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in June 2012, the Green Industry agenda has been promoted by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on a global scale. The green industry agenda aims at encouraging more efficient use of energy and raw materials in manufacturing processes and services. The platform thus contributes both to cleaner and more competitive industrial development while improving the contributions of enterprises to economic development, social and environment protection.
In line with the Green Industry Agenda and the vision for transforming Kampala into a vibrant, attractive and sustainable city, the PTF with support from GIZ-RUWASS launched the first Kampala Green Industry Campaign (GIC) in April 2016. The overall objective of the Kampala GIC 2016 is to promote sustainable economic development, competitiveness and environmental quality by adopting better occupational health and safety practices, resource use efficiency and pollution reduction in industries within Kampala City. The campaign focuses on engaging industries through a competitive approach where the industries will be assessed on their occupational health and safety practices, resource use efficiency, waste management (reduce, reuse, recycle), water and energy conservation, and sanitation.
