Kampala Waste Water Dialogue (KWWD) 2015

The Kampala Pollution Control Task Force (PTF) organized a whole day public- private dialogue at the Speke Resort & Conference Centre Munyonyo on the 18th of November 2015. The dialogue was well attended by PTF institution heads, over 140 industry representatives and the private sector including exhibitors such as Davis & Shirtliff, Bio Waste Management, De Waste (U) Ltd and EPSILON Uganda.
 

The dialogue agenda included trainings on waste management and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) (KCCA), water utilization and wastewater treatment (NWSC), Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production (RECP) (UCPC), pollution challenges faced by industries in Kampala (NEMA), hazardous waste handling and safe disposal (EPSILON Uganda), wastewater management techniques (Davis & Shirtliff), and the economic gains from cleaner production (Crown Beverages Limited).
 

PTF representatives, Crown Beverages and Epsilon Uganda led a panel discussion and the following key questions and issues were raised; the need for more sensitization on cleaner production before industries invest in wastewater treatment equipment, the economic gains/ returns of  investment in cleaner production, cultural resistance to cleaner production, the high costs of not responding to pollution, the rewards of environmental compliance, involvement of other key stakeholders such as Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) and Uganda National Bureau Of Standards (UNBS) in pollution control, possibility of leveraging funds/ resources for Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) by KCCA and the possibility of collective ETPs amongst industries to share costs of wastewater equipment.
 

The panel discussion was followed by round table discussions for participants to share reasons that inhibit them from implementing cleaner production practices and having onsite wastewater treatment innovations, and also propose practical solutions that can aid to achieve a greener industrial sector.
 

Closing remarks were made by Dr. Judith Tukahirwa Tumusiime, Deputy Executive Director KCCA who together with members of the PTF launched the Industrial Wastewater Management guides for Battery Recycling Industries, Paint Industries and Soft Drink Industries.

PTF World Environment Day 2014 commemoration

The Kampala Pollution Control Task Force (PTF) launched an awareness campaign on the 18th of June 2014 to commemorate the World Environment Day which is celebrated every year on the 5th of June and is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment.
 

The event began with marching from the Bugolobi NWSC Sewage treatment plant through Industrial area to UMA Lugogo showgrounds. Participants included a band, environmental related civil societies and schools.
 

Marching was followed by a symposium and exhibition where NWSC, Kakira Sugar Works, BIDCO, Nile Breweries Limited and Century Bottling Limited gave presentations on efficient resource utilization, waste management and economic sustainability on the industrial sector.
 

There was also free exhibition space for private companies to show case products, services and best practices in environmental pollution control, wastewater and general waste management, recycling, reuse, water conservation and sanitation in Kampala City.
