Legality of Operation: Possession of basic mandatory approvals for establishment and operation of an industry in Uganda and specifically Kampala City.
Waste Management:
(i) Segregation of waste at source
(ii) Waste reduction, reuse and recycling practices in place
(iii) On-site wastewater and used oil management, and compliance with effluent discharge standards
(iv) Adequate storage, transportation and disposal system in accordance with the waste management regulations.
Water Management and Use:
(i) Legal connection to piped water supply and appropriate bill management
(ii) Internal water loss control mechanisms
(iii) Water saving practices e.g.; safe re-use, rainwater harvesting, safe storage and appropriate internal utilization
(iv) Compliance to water abstraction permit conditions where applicable.
Energy Management and Conservation:
(i) Legal connection to electricity supply and appropriate bill management
(ii) Innovative internal energy saving and management practices
(iii) Use of alternative energy sources.
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS):
(i) Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
(ii) Firefighting and emergency preparedness and response mechanisms
(iii) Training of workers on OHS (iv)Workplace welfare (sanitation, drinking water, changing rooms and eating area etc)
(v) On-site mechanisms for prevention of exposure to hazardous substances, materials or waste
(vi) General safeguards for health, social and environmental risks within the industry.
Air Pollution: Control mechanisms for internal and atmospheric emissions (dust, smoke, etc.)
Noise Management: Best practices on noise management and compliance to noise regulations/ permissible levels.
Management commitment to environmental protection
(i) Greening within the facility
(ii) Designated personnel for environmental compliance.
(iii) Health and Safety and Environment management procedures in place and well documented
(iv) Training and awareness of staff
