KCCA LEADERSHIP RALLIES LEARNERS AHEAD OF FINAL EXAMS, VOWS TO REWARD TOP PERFORMERS

As the 2024 national examinations season kicks off, the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) leadership has rallied students, parents, and teachers to give their best in the upcoming exams, with promises of awards for top-performing learners.

During a special dedication service held on October 10, at City Hall for candidates about to sit for their final exams, Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago emphasized the importance of academic excellence. He announced that KCCA would recognize learners who excel, particularly those who score aggregate 4 in the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).

"We are committed to rewarding excellence. We want to encourage all our learners to strive for the best, especially in public schools. Getting grade X is unacceptable, despite the challenges we face in Kampala," Mayor Lukwago said.

Last year, no student in Kampala's public schools achieved the coveted aggregate 4, with the top performer scoring a 5. "This year, we aim to award at least three top learners at each level—PLE, UCE, and UACE."

The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) will administer four types of exams this year: the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) for the New Lower Secondary Curriculum (NLSC), the UCE Transitional Exam for the old curriculum, the PLE, and the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).

The UCE exams will run from October 11 to November 8, 2024, for NLSC candidates and until November 15 for those under the old curriculum.

The PLE will take place from November 4 to 7, while UACE exams will run from November 8 to December 6.

KCCA, which manages 79 public primary schools and 22 public secondary schools, is focused on preparing students for success.

Lukwago called on teachers to help create a supportive exam environment, cautioning against making the process intimidating for learners.

"Teachers, help us prepare these children well. Do not threaten them. These exams are not a threat but an opportunity to prove their potential," Mayor Lukwago added, wishing all candidates success in their upcoming exams.

Frank Rusa, the Acting Executive Director of KCCA, extended his support and encouragement to learners, commending the teachers, parents, and school management for their dedication to improving education standards.

“I want to thank His Excellency the President of Uganda for his vision of Universal Education. It has allowed both the rich and poor to access education. This opportunity for everyone is crucial,” Rusa said.

As students from across Kampala brace for the national exams, the KCCA leadership remains committed to ensuring that all candidates receive the guidance and support they need to excel.

The dedication service marked the beginning of a crucial exam season, with students gearing up to determine their futures in education and beyond.
