Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), on Wednesday convened a critical planning meeting to operationalize the Kampala City Emergency Response Committee.

The meeting, held at Speke Hotel, brought together key stakeholders to strategize on addressing the city's pressing emergency and risk management challenges.

Robert Nowere, the Acting Deputy Executive Director, opened the meeting with a call for coordination between partners.

“We administer the city on behalf of the government, but we cannot solve the problems alone. Coordination and partnership are essential to effectively address the hazards facing Kampala,” Nowere said.

He emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in tackling city hazards like floods, fires, collapsing buildings, riots, and waste management challenges.

Abel Mugalya, the interim Chairperson of the Kampala Emergency Response Committee, underscored the need for resource mobilization and joint efforts.

“The challenges and risks in Kampala are many. When we come together, we can identify who has the resources and work together to respond effectively,” he stated.

Stakeholders in attendance included representatives from the Uganda Police Force, Department of Meteorology, Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS), and Makerere University. The meeting aimed to develop and update the Kampala City Emergency Response Plan, ensuring a coordinated approach to managing risks and emergencies.

Key topics discussed included the mobilization of equipment, resource sharing, and enhancing communication among stakeholders to mitigate hazards affecting the city.

KCCA reaffirmed its commitment to leading efforts in creating a safer and more resilient Kampala through robust emergency preparedness and response mechanisms.
