KCCA, UNDP PARTNER TO CERTIFY YOUTH FOR COMPETITIVE JOB MARKET

The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is paving the way for youth empowerment in Kampala through a training and certification initiative.

A total of 125 beneficiaries from the Kabalagala One Stop Youth Center, and the Employment Services Bureau, have undergone Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT)  assessment in a range of vocational courses, including cosmetology, photography, videography, hairdressing, and graphics.

UNDPs support includes payment of DIT assessment fees for all trainees to enable them acquire a Worker’s PAS (“Worker’s Practically Acquired Skills”), a certification that significantly enhances employability both locally and internationally.

The Worker’s PAS is a vital document that certifies the skills and competencies of an individual for a specific occupation. It bridges the gap between informal and formal training systems, providing a unique opportunity to transfer skills acquired informally into recognized qualifications.

With each new skill acquired, beneficiaries undergo assessment and certification, which is documented in their Worker’s PAS.

This aligns with Uganda’s Vocational Qualifications Framework (UVQF) standards, ensuring that certified workers can compete effectively in the labor market.

“Certification of skills through DIT is critical for enhancing the competitiveness and quality of the workforce,” said Brighton Lutaya, Officer of Employment Management KCCA.

“This initiative will not only improve the employability of the youth but also contribute to the growth of Uganda’s skilled workforce.”

The training at the Kabalagala One Stop Youth Center and Employment Services Bureau is provided free of charge, with the goal of equipping youth with marketable skills to secure decent employment and improve their livelihoods.

“This initiative is a lifeline for many young people seeking to improve their quality of life,” Lutaya added. “By certifying their skills, we’re ensuring they can access better opportunities and contribute to the country’s economic growth.” Lutaya said.

Through this program, KCCA are setting a precedent for empowering youth with industry-recognized certifications, promoting a skilled workforce ready to meet national and global demands.
