At least 280 youths have graduated from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Youth Skilling Program, having completed training in various disciplines aimed at enhancing innovation and productivity.

The graduation ceremony, held at the Employment Services Bureau under the theme "Enhancing Innovation and Productivity of Young People through Skilling," marked a significant milestone in KCCA's efforts to tackle unemployment and equip young people with practical skills for sustainable livelihoods.

The Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, graced the event and commended KCCA for its efforts in addressing unemployment among the youth. "This initiative is a testament to the power of investing in young people. It empowers them to transform their communities and contribute meaningfully to our city’s development," Lukwago said.

The graduates received training in areas such as hairdressing and beauty, videography and photography, and ICT. Those with an agricultural background were also equipped with specialized skills to enhance their productivity. The program also included a six-month placement for 32 iServe volunteers within KCCA.

Sheila Birungi, Director of Gender, Community Services, and Production, highlighted the program’s impact.

"We aim to curb unemployment and the behaviors associated with it by imparting skills that enable young people to lead better, more productive lives," Birungi said.

The training, conducted at the Kabalagala One-Stop Youth Center and the Employment Services Bureau, culminated in the presentation of certificates and toolkits to the graduates.

Hair and beauty trainees received items such as hair dryers, steamers, chairs, towels, and warmers, enabling them to start group ventures or individual businesses.

Poline Obuka, speaking on behalf of the beauty class, expressed gratitude to KCCA for empowering them with skills and startup tools.

Similarly, Davis Muwonge, representing the digital class, shared his success story, stating, "I have already started my own ICT hub, and this is just the beginning."

The KCCA Youth Skilling Program continues to transform lives, providing opportunities for Uganda's youth to overcome challenges and become self-reliant contributors to the nation's development.
