KAMPALA CITY LORD MAYOR LUKWAGO HOSTS NIGERIAN DELEGATION
PUBLISHED — 11th, August 2022The Lord Mayor of Kampala City His Worship Erias Lukwago received a Nigeria delegation that comprised of members of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Kuru and other leaders.
The deligation was led by the NIPSS Secretary and Director of Administration Brigadier General Chukwuemeka FJ Udaya.
Lukwago hosted his visitors in the Mayor’s Parlour at City Hall where the visitors and the hosts had an opportunity to learn about each other’s government operations and explore the possibility of further engagements.
At the beginning of the meeting, he expressed his happiness at the delegation visit to Kampala. He spoke about Kampala’s history and about the governance of the city and the daily life of the city dwellers.
“We are very appreciative of this initiative to pay us a visit to benchmark our policies, governance, and development in Kampala. There is a lot to learn and we are also willing and ready to learn from you,” Lukwago said
He also touched the leadership structure of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) which comprises of the technical team led by the Executive Director and the Political wing led by the Lord Mayor.
Lukwago gifted the delegation head an Impala replica. An Impala is an important animal, it is where the city derives its name Kampala from. The home of Impala.
Udaya said they are visiting Kampala and Uganda to boost the friendship between Uganda and Nigeria.
“We want to learn from you better practices on how to improve our work,” Udaya said.
Prof Tunji Olaopa the Directing Staff at NIPSS, said they have visited Jinja City, Entebbe Municipality and Kampala City to see the layout of the local government system in Uganda.
“We are going back with a lot of lessons; the extent to which local councils have delegated powers and able to work with in the constitution. We have learnt a lot regarding the governance of the cities especially from the mayors,” Olaopa said.
He revealed that there are a lot of of similarities especially how Kampala is governed which is the same as Abuja City.
The KCCA Deputy Executive Director Eng David Luyimbazi explained that the city is facing challenges including the Boda Boda issues, garbage and slums, pollution and can pick lessons from Nigeria.
“We want to borrow solutions on how to handle the boda boda problem. We are trying to regulate it and bring back order in our city,” Luyimbazi said.
