KCCA ED PLEDGES CLEANER, SAFER KAMPALA IN RAMADAN AND LENT MESSAGE

PUBLISHED — 6th, March 2025

As Muslims observe the holy month of Ramadan and Christians engage in the solemn period of Lent, the Executive Director of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Sharifah Buzeki, has reaffirmed KCCA’s commitment to transforming Kampala into a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive city.

In her special message to the residents of Kampala, on March 6, 2025, Buzeki emphasized the importance of patience and cooperation as KCCA continues to roll out major infrastructure projects aimed at improving the city's road network and waste management systems.

Buzeki highlighted several key infrastructure projects currently underway, including the construction of over 30 roads, covering approximately 89 kilometers, under the Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP). Some of the roads being upgraded include Old Port Bell, Spring, Salama, Old Mubende, Sir Apollo Kaggwa, and Queen’s Way among others.

Additionally, Phase I roads under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Urban Development Program (GKMA-UDP) are being constructed, covering a total of 19.85 kilometers. These include Katalemwa, Muganzilwanza, Wavamunno, Kyebando, Kira, and Nsambya Estate roads. These developments are expected to not only improve urban mobility but also create employment opportunities, particularly benefiting women in Kampala.

Acknowledging the temporary inconveniences caused by ongoing construction, Buzeki urged road users to remain patient and adhere to traffic diversions while following the guidance of flagmen at various sites to ensure smooth movement.

Buzeki who later made an on spot inspection of ongoing road works under the Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project, grilled contractors and consultants working on different roads over lack of speed and delays on the project. She cautioned the contractors on the project deadlines, safety of road users, quality and value for money while expediting works to meet deadlines.

"We remain committed to working together to improve the city’s infrastructure. While our ongoing civil works may cause temporary inconveniences, we urge all road users to remain patient. Our internal teams are working tirelessly to seal potholes and ensure all roads are fixed, delivering a city we can all be proud of,” Buzeki stated.

Beyond road infrastructure, Buzeki underscored the necessity of proper waste management in keeping Kampala clean. She called on residents to adopt responsible waste disposal practices, including sorting garbage at the source by separating decomposable waste from recyclables.

“This city is ours. Let’s manage waste responsibly by reusing, recycling, and reducing,” she urged. “KCCA has provided smart bins in different locations to assist pedestrians, and according to the Physical Planning Act, every building in the city is required to have at least two litter bins.”

She also reminded residents of the legal implications of littering, citing the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Act 2019, which criminalizes littering and stipulates penalties, including imprisonment of up to 10 years.

To further enhance waste management, Buzeki announced that KCCA will be providing additional garbage bins in various locations across the city, ensuring that residents have more disposal options to keep their surroundings clean.

Recognizing the significance of this spiritual season, Buzeki extended heartfelt greetings to both Muslim and Christian communities, encouraging them to use this time for reflection, unity, and acts of kindness.

“On behalf of KCCA, I extend my warmest wishes to all our Muslim brothers and sisters in this blessed month of Ramadan and to our Christian community as they observe Lent,” she said.

She highlighted the importance of faith and community solidarity, urging residents to extend compassion to those in need.

“This sacred period reminds us of the importance of faith, unity, and compassion. As we fast, pray, and seek spiritual renewal, let us also take this opportunity to strengthen the bonds of our community.”

Buzeki reassured residents of KCCA’s unwavering commitment to accelerating infrastructure development, improving service delivery, and fostering an environment where everyone can thrive.

“May this holy season bring you peace, blessings, and fulfillment,” she concluded. “Ramadan Mubarak and Lenten Blessings to you all!”
