The Ambassador of Netherlands to Uganda H.E Dr Karin Boven has applauded Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) for the progress it is making to transform the city.
Boven who paid a courtesy visit to KCCA on March 15, had a meeting with the KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka, the Deputy ED Eng. David Luyimbazi and other technical staff.
The meeting was held to track the progress on the projects that are being funded by the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
“KCCA has demonstrated the necessary commitment and willingness to improve the living and working conditions of city dwellers. Every day, we see positive efforts aimed at beautifying the city; increasing access to medical services, infrastructural development, waste management, education, clean water and facilitation of commercial activities despite having constrained financial resources,” Boven said.
She however noted that COVID 19 had affected most of the operations at the embassy including monitoring of ongoing projects.
The Netherlands has expressed interest in intervening in the following areas; - food security, waste management, health, Gender, private sector and public support among others.
Boven thanked Dr Daniel Okello, the KCCA Director Public Health and Environment for spearheading waste management project and coming up with innovations to address the city challenges.
She promised to work closely with the city authority to address some of the issues that had been presented including the acquiring of another consultant on the projects that are still lagging behind.
Kisaka expressed her gratitude to the Kingdom of the Netherlands for their collaboration and for supporting various projects at KCCA.
Some of the projects include the development of an Urban Transport Master Plan and developing Kyanja Agriculture Resource Centre.
Kisaka said that the process of development of the old taxi park was ongoing and that it is linked to the Urban Transport Master Plan where KCCA plans to provide the residents of Kampala with fast and reliable public transport services by 2040.
Although waste management remains a major challenge in the city Kisaka said she is happy that with the new innovations and support from partners, some of the challenges would be addressed.
Stephen Bayite Kasule, the Senior Advisor Private Sector and Economic Diplomacy, at the embassy of Netherland promised to work with KCCA to identify critical areas that need intervention.
