PUBLISHED — 28th, May 2025

In a move to promote decent work and ensure compliance with labour laws, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) labour officers today conducted a joint inspection at Britania Allied Industries Ltd in Ntinda and Luuka Plastics Ltd in Kawempe.

This is part of a series of workplace visits leading up to the Kampala Labour Day celebrations scheduled for May 30, 2025, at City Hall Upper Gardens.

The inspections led by the Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi are organized by KCCA through the Directorate of Gender, Community Services, and Production, which is mandated to oversee labour administration services across the city's five divisions.

“We are here to ensure that employers are providing a safe and healthy working environment, and that workers’ rights are protected. This is not a fault-finding mission but an opportunity for dialogue, improvement, and shared responsibility,” Kigenyi said.

Sections 10 and 11 of the Employment Act No 6 of 2006, empowers the labour inspector to enter any workplace at any time to engage in labour inspection.

The inspections aim to ensure a safe and conducive work environment, while enhancing compliance with national labour legislation and international labour standards.

This year’s Labour Day theme is “Promoting Decent Work, Economic Empowerment through the Parish Development Model (PDM), and Strengthening Compliance to Labour Laws and Standards.”

The inspections serve as a build-up to the commemorative event and reflect KCCA's commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of workers in Kampala.

During the inspection officials assessed a range of critical workplace parameters, including occupational safety and health (OSH) measures, employee welfare provisions, availability of statutory policy documents, staff training, data management, and the implementation of safety protocols such as signage, emergency assembly points, and safe work systems.

The inspectors, emphasized commitment to workplace hygiene, safety protocols, and the availability of contracts for its employees. Technical guidance was offered on areas requiring improvement in compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act and other labour regulations.

The joint inspections, provide a platform for engagement between regulators and the private sector. They are a crucial tool in enforcing compliance, offering technical advice, and addressing systemic challenges in the labour sector.
