KCCA LEOPARDS TRIUMPH OVER UCU LADY CANONS IN NAIL BITING FINISH
PUBLISHED — 3rd, May 2025The KCCA Leopards edged past UCU Lady Canons with a narrow 63-61 victory in a thrilling National Basketball League encounter held on Friday night at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.
The win was not just a significant boost to KCCA’s title hopes, but also a moment of pride for the institution as the Executive Director of Kampala Capital City Authority, Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki, and her Deputy Benson Kigenyi were in attendance to witness the nail-biting contest.
Buzeki, a known supporter of sports development in the city, joined the Leopards’ bench in celebration moments after the final whistle, applauding the team’s spirited performance.
“It was a proud moment for all of us. The team showed heart and determination,” Buzeki said after the game. “We remain committed to supporting sports as a tool for transformation and unity in Kampala.”
Buzeki's presence highlighted the city authority’s continued investment in sports and youth empowerment.
The tightly contested game saw both teams trade leads across all four quarters. UCU took an early 13-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter, thanks to two sharp jump shots from Hajara Najjuko.
The Leopards suffered a blow when key player Tracy Namugosa was forced off due to injury, but the team maintained composure under pressure.
Perus Nyamwenge proved to be the difference maker on the court. She drained a crucial three-point shot just before halftime to level the score at 31-31. Nyamwenge continued her dominance in the second half, eventually finishing with a game-high 22 points.
After the break, the Lady Canons slightly pulled ahead and entered the final quarter with a three-point cushion. However, the Leopards staged a strong comeback in the closing minutes, with Asinah Kabendela adding 10 points to support Nyamwenge’s efforts.
Despite solid performances from UCU’s Shilah Lamunu (13 points) and Najjuko (10 points), KCCA’s resilience saw them claim a hard-fought two-point win.
With this win, KCCA Leopards solidify their position as serious contenders in this year’s league campaign.
