BUSEGA MARKET VENDORS TO BE REGISTERED TO STREAMLINE OPERATIONS
PUBLISHED — 4th, April 2025
The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has announced the commencement of vendor registration exercise at Busega Market, set to begin on April 7, aimed at streamlining operations and bring order to the market.
This exercise set to last for a week was announced by KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki, on Friday April 04 during a meeting with the vendors held at Busega market in Rubaga division. According to Buzeki, the registration is in line with the Markets Act 2023.
Addressing the vendors, Buzeki emphasized the need for harmony and organization within the market, urging vendors to embrace the registration process.
“We must commend the President for providing quality workspaces. Now, our focus is to ensure proper organization in the market,” she said. “We urge all vendors to participate in the registration exercise, which is crucial for creating a functional and accountable market environment.”
Buzeki assured vendors that the Authority was aware of various concerns and pledged to work with the community to resolve them.
Once registration begins on April 7, it will run for one week, after which lists of registered vendors will be displayed for verification.
The following week, the vendors will be grouped into departments based on their line of trade, and will then elect their departmental leaders in accordance with the law.
“We’re not interested in who becomes a leader; our concern is that the process is transparent and aligns with the departments formed under the new market structure,” Buzeki said.
KCCA manages 16 public markets across Kampala and says the vendor registration exercise is part of the efforts to improve transparency, accountability, and service delivery.
“We are here to advice and work with you. Let's register, organize, and make our markets better,” Buzeki said.
The Interagency Committee on Kampala Markets, which includes representatives from Local Government, KCCA, and security agencies, will oversee the process.
“Our goal is to create order and prosperity in our markets. Let’s work together to ensure that everyone benefits,” she concluded.
The Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Hajat Minsa Kabanda, called on all stakeholders to avoid politicizing market activities and instead work towards creating harmony and organization.
“The market is not yet officially opened. We need to be organized and embrace harmony. Let us not politicize the market. Registering every vendor is the first step toward ensuring smooth operations,” Kabanda said.
She emphasized that the registration exercise, will ensure that every vendor is accounted for and allocated a proper space, with no individual allowed to own more than one stall.
After the community engagement, Minister Kabanda, the Buzeki, Deputy ED Benson Kigenyi, and other officials toured Busega Market to assess the situation firsthand.
