KAMPALA COMMEMORATES WORLD DAY OF REMBERANCE
PUBLISHED — 18th, November 2024Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) joined the global community in marking the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on November 17, 2024, during a poignant event held at Namayiba Bus Terminal In Kampala. The commemoration, aimed at honoring the lives lost and those affected by road traffic accidents, brought together stakeholders, road users, and government officials under the theme "Remember, Support, Act: Towards Safer Roads for All."
The event was graced by the Guest of Honor, General Katumba Wamala, the Minister for Works and Transport, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reducing road fatalities. In his address, General Katumba highlighted the importance of road safety as a collective responsibility, urging all road users to adopt safe practices and emphasizing the role of enforcement, education, and infrastructure development in curbing accidents.
"Today, we remember the lives lost and the families forever changed by road crashes. As we reflect, let us also act by ensuring safer roads, responsible driving, and strict adherence to traffic laws," General Katumba said.
KCCA is undertaking several initiatives aimed at improving road safety in the city. These include ongoing road upgrades under the Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP), installation of traffic lights, construction of pedestrian walkways, and awareness campaigns targeting drivers, motorcyclists throught monthly cycling and and events such the Car Free Day.
The day also featured testimonies from road traffic accident survivors, who shared their experiences and called for greater community awareness on road safety.
The day was climaxed with attendees participating in a candle-lighting ceremony to honor the memory of victims and pledge collective action towards safer roads.
The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims serves as a solemn reminder of the urgent need to prioritize road safety for the well-being of communities. KCCA reaffirmed its dedication to working with partners in creating a safer and more sustainable urban transport system in Kampala For a Better City.
