SCHOOLS SHOWCASE BEST PRACTICES IN WASTE MANAGEMENT AS KCCA HOSTS EDUCATION PARTNERS

In an inspiring initiative to tackle the city's waste management issues, Clever’s Origin Primary School and Nakivubo Primary School presented songs on waste management at the recent City Education and Sports Partner Engagement Meeting at City Hall, Kampala.

The event, officiated by Kampala's Lord Mayor, H.W. Erias Lukwago, underscored the critical role of education in addressing urban challenges.

During the meeting, Lukwago commended both the schools for their innovative performances and lauded education sector stakeholders, including private education service providers, for their dedication to supporting KCCA in providing essential educational services.

“Your interventions are not just beneficial to KCCA, but crucial in helping the State fulfill its mandate of providing education as mandated by law,” Lukwago emphasized, recognizing the resilience of these partners amid challenging conditions.

Organized by the Directorate of Education and Social Services, the engagement saw participation from key figures such as Robert Nowera, the Acting Deputy Executive Director, CEC members, technical staff, and other stakeholders.

Charles Maginot, Acting Director of Education and Social Services, shared an overview of KCCA's education budget allocation for the 2024/2025 fiscal year. Of the UGX 62 billion set aside, UGX 53 billion is dedicated to wages, UGX 10 billion for other operational needs, and UGX 2.2 billion for domestic development.

Maginot highlighted KCCA’s recent achievements in education, attributing these successes to the invaluable support of partners. Notably, KCCA has enrolled over 72,230 pupils across 79 government-aided primary schools, achieving gender parity with a slight edge in female enrollment at 54% (38,815 girls) compared to 46% (33,415 boys).

Additionally, the authority has constructed 59 new classrooms, renovated 51 existing classrooms, installed solar power in three schools for the deaf, and secured land titles for a total of 14 schools, with efforts underway to acquire titles for 10 more.

Further developments include the purchase of land for Kasubi Family Primary School and the completion of fencing for Ntinda Primary School and Naguru Katali Primary School.

Among the partners were; Roofings Group which has committed to building classroom blocks at Kasubi Family Primary school, Unicef Uganda, SLICKS among others.

The day-long engagement provided a platform for city education and sports administrators, private service providers, stakeholders, and partners to discuss policy and structural interventions essential for advancing education in Kampala.

The forum aimed to foster collaborative solutions to improve the educational landscape, aligning with KCCA’s mission to create a conducive learning environment for all city residents.
