MAKINDYE AND CENTRAL DIVISIONS AREA LAND COMMITTEES SWORN IN

The newly appointed members of the Area Land Committees for Makindye and Kampala Central Divisions have been officially sworn in.

The event held on Tuesday was presided over by the Chief Magistrate Edgar Karakire, at Parlor marks a significant step in enhancing land management and administration within Kampala City.

The ceremony saw the swearing-in of members from the two divisions, following similar proceedings in November last year for Nakawa, Kawempe, and Rubaga divisions.

In Kampala Central Division, the Area Land Committee is chaired by Eddy Kalema, with members David Tamale, Elizabeth Kabarungi, Eva Birungi, and Fahad Lukwago. The Makindye Division committee is led by Agnes Mulebweyire, with Lwanga Bazanyanengo, Simon Batuusa, Muzafaru Lubega, and Kezron Luwuge serving as members.

Dignitaries in attendance included the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, KCCA Council Speaker Zahara Luyirika, and Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka, among others. The Mayor of Kampala Central Division, Salim Uhuru, also graced the event.

Lukwago, addressing the newly sworn-in members, emphasized the importance of vigilance and diligent service. "Your role in managing land is crucial for the peaceful coexistence of our communities," he noted. "Serve with integrity and always be vigilant."

Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura highlighted the sensitivity and scarcity of land, urging the committee members to protect this vital asset. "Land is a fragile and tempting asset, but we trust you to do great work. Your responsibility is to protect, not to steal," she stressed.

Executive Director Kisaka echoed similar sentiments, underscoring the importance of land in city administration. "Local leaders managing land are key to peaceful coexistence. I urge you to execute your duty with integrity and fairness," she said.

KCCA Council Speaker Zahara Luyirika advised the committee members to familiarize themselves with the laws governing land and their roles. "Land issues are critical. Inquire as much as you can and ensure you provide the advisory role expected of you," she urged.

Salim Uhuru, the Mayor of Kampala Central Division, expressed his satisfaction with the establishment of the committees. "I'm happy that we have the committees in place. Make us proud and serve diligently," he remarked.

Chief Magistrate Karakire, who oversaw the oath-taking, cautioned the members against corruption and laziness, warning that any failure in service would have dire consequences for the communities they serve.

The Area Land Committees, established under Section 64 of the Land Act of 1998, Cap.227, serve as advisory bodies to the District Land Boards, playing a critical role in determining land rights and recommending individuals for land acquisition.

The members, who serve a three-year term, are eligible for reappointment for one additional term, with the possibility of premature termination for failure to perform their duties or other valid reasons as determined by the district council.
