KAMPALA YOUTHS URGED TO JOIN CLIMATE CHANGE FIGHT

Youths in Kampala have been encouraged to join global efforts to combat climate change. During a meeting held on July 12 at the Mayor’s Parlor, young people were guided on how to apply for climate funds allocated by COP 28 to more than 100,000 cities worldwide.

These funds, targeted at youths aged 18-24 years, offer an opportunity for young individuals to make a positive impact on their communities and the environment.

The meeting saw the attendance of key figures such as the Deputy Director, Gender and Community Services at the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Daniel Kaseregenyi.

Kaseregenyi expressed his gratitude to H.W Erias Lukwago for his advocacy efforts during COP 28, which took place last year in Dubai. He congratulated the youth present and emphasized their crucial role in the fight against climate change.

Kaseregenyi encouraged the youth to harness their innovative potential through technology and social media platforms such as TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook.

“Whatever pushes the youth to be fundamental, use that energy to combat climate change,” he stated.

Highlighting inclusivity, Kaseregenyi pointed out that the climate change fight is open to all youth in Kampala who meet the standards outlined in the Kampala Climate Action Plan, accessible through the KCCA website (https://www.kcca.go.ug/uDocs/Kampala-Climate-Change-Action.pdf )

Tim Mugerwa, Executive Director of Green Campaign Africa, also stressed the importance of innovation and creativity in this fight.

He emphasized focusing on advocacy, policy implementation, and practical solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Mugerwa mentioned that the forum, in partnership with organizations such as Bloomberg Philanthropies, Uganda Cities, and Local Governments, aims to amplify the voices of youth through ten youth-based organizations.
