STREET VENDORS GET WORKING SPACE IN KALERWE

PUBLISHED — 27th, July 2022

The Government through the Microfinance Support Center (MFSC) has today launched the construction of a new working space for hawkers and vendors in Kampala city.

Located in Kalerwe, Kawempe Division the space measuring approximately two acres is set to accommodate former hawkers and vendors who were operating on the streets

The construction of this working space is in line with the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Smart City campaign  of decongesting the city  and increasing working spaces for vendors and hawkers in the surburbs

Currently illegal vending is prohibited in Kampala and all vendors are required to operate in legally recognized working places like markets.

The site at Kalerwe is being constructed in partnership with the Federation of Hawkers and Vendors Association (FHVA) who is the key stakeholder.

The KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka commended the Micro finance centre for the generous contribution they have made and asked partners to join the drive to make Kampala a smart city.

She hailed the NRM government and the Head of state YKM for ensuring that the hawkers are well catered for as stakeholders in the city.

The President has emphasised getting working places for vendors which KCCA is implementing and more of these are to be constructed in all the five divisions that make up Kampala.

The ceremony was witnessed by the Kawempe Division Street vendors get workspace in Kalerwe.
