KCCA LAUNCHES ACTION PLAN TO ADDRESS MALNUTRITION IN KAMPALA

PUBLISHED — 28th, March 2024

In a concerted effort to combat the growing challenge of malnutrition, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has launched a comprehensive action plan aimed at reducing malnutrition burdens within the city.

Known as the Kampala Capital City Authority Nutrition Action Plan (KCCA-NAP) 2023/2024 -2029/2030, the plan will run for seven years.

The launch was presided over by the Minister of State for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Hon Kabuye Kyofatogabye, on Wednesday.

The urgency of this initiative is underscored by recent statistics from the Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS) of 2022, which revealed alarming figures.

Child stunting stood at 16.5 percent, while the prevalence of overweight children under five years of age had risen from 3.9 percent to 6.3 percent. The situation was equally concerning among adults, with increases noted in overweight and obesity rates among both men and women.

In his remarks, Kyofatogabye called for a shift in traditional practices, urging religious leaders to refer malnourished individuals to nutritionists and healthcare facilities rather than relying solely on prayers or traditional healing methods.

During the launch event, key stakeholders voiced their commitment to tackling malnutrition head-on.

Edward Walugembe, Commissioner of the SCI Office of the Prime Minister, emphasized the integral role of nutrition in achieving Uganda's Vision 2040 and building a modern society.

He stressed the necessity of collaboration among all sectors, citing the complexity of nutrition challenges that require a unified approach.

Sheila Nyakwezi, Family Team Lead at USAID, commended the efforts KCCA for adopting a multi-sectoral approach to the nutrition program. She highlighted the importance of leveraging data and existing community structures to ensure the success of the action plan.

Dr. Nathan Tumwesigye from USAID's Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition (MCHN) project acknowledged the partnership with KCCA across five divisions, expressing gratitude for the establishment of the Nutrition Coordination Committee. He emphasized the need to address gaps in reaching beneficiaries effectively.

The launch of the action plan signals a united front in the battle against malnutrition, with a focus on education, community engagement, and coordinated efforts across various sectors.

As Uganda progresses towards its Vision 2040, prioritizing nutrition emerges as a critical step in building a healthier and more prosperous society.
