KCCA LAUNCHES MONTHLY CYCLING DAY

The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) in partnership with eBee Uganda has taken a proactive step towards promoting sustainable urban transportation with the launch of the Kampala Cycling Day.

This monthly community initiative aims to encourage the adoption of cycling as a zero-emission mode of transport, aligning with the city's vision of becoming a greener and healthier Kampala Smart City.

The inaugural Kampala Cycling Day kicked off today, drawing participation from a diverse group of cyclists, including city residents, stakeholders, Fun Cycling Uganda and representatives from the eBee mobility company. eBee Uganda is apan African e-mobility company based in Industrial area Plot 9 along Old Portbell road that is contributing alot to our smart city agenda through the provision of their electric bicycles that are providing a smart and sustainable mode of transport as an alternative means.

The event commenced at City Hall, where over 70 cyclists joined in a symbolic ride around the city streets.

One of the notable highlights of the cycling event was the presence of electric bicycles, showcasing a commitment to clean energy solutions amid Kampala's ongoing challenges with pollution and poor air quality.

The use of electric bicycles not only promotes environmental sustainability but also offers a practical alternative for commuters.

Speaking at the event, Engineer Irene Namuyiga, the Road Safety Expert at KCCA, emphasized the significance of cycling as a sustainable and clean mode of transport.

She announced that the Kampala Cycling Day will be a recurring event held on the last Friday of every month, with the upcoming event scheduled for April 22.

Engineer Namuyiga further reiterated KCCA's commitment to enhancing infrastructure to support cycling, including the development of a Non-Motorized Transport corridor along Luwumu Street to Namirembe Road and the introduction of bicycle lanes across various parts of the city.

"Cycling is not just about transportation; it's about promoting a healthier lifestyle, reducing emissions, and creating a more livable city," stated Engineer Namuyiga, encouraging more city dwellers to embrace cycling as a viable mode of travel.

The Kampala Cycling Day represents a collaborative effort between KCCA, stakeholders, and the community to foster sustainable transportation practices and pave the way for a cleaner, greener Kampala.​
